CHAPTER 6
FAILURE: HOW THE CHURCH CONTINUES TO ACHIEVE IT
Dr. Bernard Nathanson, essentially the father of the abortion movement in the early 1970s, once revealed the secret of his success. The reason that supporters of abortion rights were able to accomplish so much with Roe v. Wade, he said, was that the church was asleep. In many ways, the church has remained asleep on this issue. âLeadersâ in the church say that they cannot talk about political issuesâon that, they are gravely mistaken. The IRS regulations that grant churches tax-exempt status only forbid the endorsement of a specific political candidate by a church. There are no regulations regarding the discussion of issues like abortion. There is currently nothing in the law or in IRS regulations which would allow a church to be penalized for speaking on the issue of abortion.
Far too many church leaders are afraid to speak about controversial subjects. They fear negative publicity and offending members of their congregation who are on the opposite side of the issue. Perhaps I am mistaken, but isnât it a pastorâs responsibility to speak truth, guard his flock, and keep them from harm? Abortion, the shedding of innocent blood, the intentional taking of human life, is an abomination in Godâs eyes. It is not the responsibility of the priest or the pastor to designate abortion as sinâGod already did. While the church has been asleep and unwilling to address the issue with anything remotely resembling vigor, more than sixty million babies have perished. Far too many in the church have no awareness of the issue at all. The Word tells us that âMy people are destroyed from lack of knowledgeââespecially true in the case of abortion, where the innocent blood of babies who have perished is on our hands. In fact, Hosea 4:6 has what could be interpreted as a dire warning for pastors and preachers who donât want to touch the issue of abortion. Consider the text: âMy people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests; because you have ignored the law of your God, I also will ignore your children.â To whom is God speaking? The priests, the leaders of His people. Who are the modern-day priests? Pastors and priests, thatâs who.
Jesus also addressed the issue of speaking out and directed his criticism to the Pharisaical religious leaders of the day. As Jesus and his disciples were entering the city of Jerusalem, the disciples were praising God and worshipping Him. The Pharisees wanted them to be silent, and in Luke 19:39-41, Jesus responds: âBut some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, âTeacher, rebuke your disciples!â âI tell you,â He answered, âif they remain silent the very stones will cry out.â As Jesus approached Jerusalem and saw the city, He wept over it.â You might ask, âHow does that apply to abortion?â It should be obvious. We have far too many leaders in the American church today who do not wish to address issues such as abortion.
